Visitors were also invited to take a seat at Filosofi Kopi’ and experience a day in one of Indonesia’s most popular coffee shops. Filosofi Kopi is a novel by Dewi Lestari that was adapted into a movie in 2015. The film changed the ways in which younger generations value coffee in Indonesia and inspired them to approach coffee making as a noble craft. The café featured in the movie is now an actual coffee shop, settled in the heart of Indonesia’s vibrant capital, Jakarta.
Serving and Drinking
This section of the exhibition focuses on the rituals associated with coffee drinking in Qatar and Indonesia.
Highlights in this section of the exhibition include an inside look at a circular space evoking a Qatari majlis. Inside, a screen displays a short film created in collaboration with Qatari youth showing the complexity of the coffee serving and drinking etiquette in Qatar, often with humorous outcomes.
The Majlis, is an art film that explores the interwoven etiquettes of Arabic coffee and the majlis space. The film follows brothers, Khalifa and Hamad, as they learn the etiquette of serving and drinking Arabic coffee and its significance in the majlis.
The film was created by NMoQ with the support of the exhibition teen interns: Ftaim Al Qahtani, Al Jouri Al Thani, Abdulrahman Al Qahtani, Al Mayasa Al Emadi and Abdulla Al Meghessib as part of the Growing Kopi, Drinking Qahwa exhibition for Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Years of Culture.
