What is coffee?
The exhibition’s first section, What is Coffee?, introduces visitors to the coffee plant and its prized beans. It also explains the origins of the term kopi (coffee in Bahasa Indonesia) from the Arabic word for coffee, qahwa.

Qahwa (Arabic coffee) is a traditional coffee drink that is popular in the Gulf region and is seen as a symbol of generosity and hospitality.

Coffee culture in Qatar encompasses both traditional Arabic coffee (qahwa) and international coffee (such as americano, flatwhite, cappuccino) which is locally referred to as ‘speciality coffee’.

Al delal (plural of dallah) are coffee pots used to brew and serve Arabic coffee (qahwa). The name comes from "al-dal" which means to pour and drink water.

The term "mocha" comes from the port of Al-Makha in Yemen, which was a major hub for the coffee trade in the 16th and 17th centuries. Coffee beans exported from Al-Makha were known for their high quality and distinct flavour.
